Something interesting happened to me the other day.
A chap I was talking to asked me innocently why we organize Greenfarm Festival and mentioned that we must be very rich with the proceeds from such an event. I hadn’t thought about this before and realized that an explanation is called for.
The fact of the matter is that Greenfarm Festival is organised by the Deutsch-Irischer Freundeskreis Bayern e. V. – many of whose members help to put this festival together on a voluntary basis. We, as DIF_Bayern e.V., use the proceeds from the festival to cover the costs of the current festival – band expenses, technical equipment and lighting, stages, security and to part finance the following year’s festival. We rely almost totally on the goodwill of our sponsors and the willingness of the Hausler – Hof family to allow their farm buildings and fields to be used for the event. In turn, the Hausler-Hof provides gastronomy. The organising team does not receive one cent in recompense, and freely sacrifices hundreds of hours of personal free time throughout the year to get this whole show on the road.
….and why?
There have been many concerns that people, especially young people, do not have the opportunity to experience handmade live folk music in natural fun surroundings and thus help to ensure its future. We want to change that and ensure that young people have a rare opportunity to hear established and up-and-coming musicians and even play with them at the sessions. We want festival-goers to have the chance to hear top quality traditional folk music from Ireland, Germany, Austria and Britain. We want people to dance and appreciate the sheer exuberance of live music at close quarters and this desire is also deeply embedded in the statutes of DIF-Bayern e.V.
Look on Greenfarm as a festival with a sense of community – a fellowship of handmade music and dance.
If nothing else, Greenfarm Festival deserves a secure future for that reason alone.
